Everyday Habit Swaps for Better Mental Wellbeing

Improving your mental wellbeing doesn’t always require major life changes. In many cases, it’s the small habits we repeat every day that have the greatest impact on how we think, feel, and respond to life’s challenges.

Old Habit Try This Instead Why It Helps
Check your phone the moment you wake up. Spend the first five minutes checking in with yourself before checking your notifications. Starting the day intentionally can reduce stress and help you feel more grounded.
Eat while scrolling. Have one meal each day without your phone, laptop or television. Mindful eating creates a natural mental break and allows your mind to slow down.
Stay indoors all day. Spend five to ten minutes outside each day. Fresh air, daylight and a change of environment can help you mentally reset.
Say yes to everything. Protect one commitment-free evening each week. Rest is part of maintaining wellbeing, not something that has to be earned.
React immediately when frustrated. Pause, take three slow breaths before responding. Creating a brief pause often leads to calmer, more thoughtful decisions.
Criticise yourself after making a mistake. Speak to yourself as you would someone you genuinely care about. Self-compassion builds resilience far more effectively than self-criticism.
Keep everything in your head. Write tasks, ideas and reminders down in one trusted place. Reducing mental clutter frees your attention for more meaningful thinking.
Finish work but continue thinking about it all evening. Create a simple end-of-work ritual, such as a walk or changing clothes. Clear transitions help your mind separate work from personal life.
Wait until you're overwhelmed. Ask yourself once a day: "What do I need right now?" Small daily check-ins often prevent stress from quietly building up.
Only contact people when you need something. Send one message simply to check in with someone. Healthy relationships are strengthened through regular, meaningful connection.
